Helmet Condition: We prefer to work on new or gently used helmets only. If you have an older helmet with the requisite dings and scratches please let us know prior to ordering. We can work with minor imperfections but can't paint cracked or damaged helmets. Also, PLEASE NOTE that some helmet manufacturers may consider custom painting to be an alteration to the helmet which may void their warranty. We use careful hand preparation, painting and finishing methods to minimize impact to helmets, but we recommend that you discuss any warranty concerns you may have with the manufacturer prior to placing your custom paint order. Most helmets feature one or more certification stickers on the back plate. We are often asked to relocate these stickers to the inside of the helmet to provide more painting area while keeping the certification information intact. Please indicate this option if you want it.
Design: We're artists, but it's YOUR helmet! So if you already know what you want your helmet to look like, tell us! Or draw it! Or collect pictures and send us copies so WE know what YOU like! If you just have a general theme in mind, or color scheme, let us know and we'll take care of the rest! We typically provide two or three design options for your review prior to starting the helmet... we'll email you sketches and wait for your feedback. Of course, if you'd prefer, you can take a chance and let US go nuts!
Turnaround Time: The typical turnaround time for a helmet project, from the time we receive the helmet until the time we put it in a box to ship it back to you, is about three weeks. We can't guarantee that turnaround, but we do work hard to try to beat it on every project!
Shipping & Handling: All shipping costs are the responsibility of the client/helmet owner. Please include a pre-paid return payment coupon with the helmet when sending it to us. That way YOU can choose how fast or slow the helmet travels. Also include a note with your name, phone number, address, email address, and any notes on helmet subject matter!
Paint Warranty: Due to the "interactive" nature of hockey, snowmobiling and other sports for which we often paint helmets we cannot offer a warranty on the custom paint. We can, however, fix paint damage to one of our helmet jobs for a minimal fee.
Environmental Impact: We use water-based acrylic automotive paints for all of our custom paint work (with the exception of oil-based striping enamels on some jobs). See www.autoaircolors.com for more information on the paints. All projects receive multiple coats of a UV protective urethane clear coat. Although this is a solvent-based product, it is carefully applied in a special paint booth to minimize impact on the immediate environment. We are currently investigating alternate finishing products, but due to the required adhesion to the helmet and impact resistance necessary for winter sports, have not yet found a suitable replacement.
